Samaan NGO is a farmer based NGO officially established in May 2002 by a group of small farmers who had learned through participating in the AgReform Project the value of team work.
Location:
The farmer based Samaan NGO is located in Samaan hamlet, Nakalifa village, about 11 Kilometers North of Fayoum city.
Its coverage area expands to Beyahmo, Beni Saleh, and Zawiat El-Karadsa; with a total cultivated area of 10,300 feddans of rich soil.
Objectives:
The objectives are to:
- Promote the cultivation of export crops.
- Develop the local farmers community socially, economically, and ecologically.
- Network with other NGOs working in development.
- Utilize IT in promoting agricultural exports, and community development.
- Increase the number of members to serve as many farmers as possible.
Activities and achievements:
- Formed a marketing committee.
- Supported 47 member farmers to cultivate 40 feddans of green beans for export, through negotiating and signing a contract with an exporter.
- Identified marketing alternatives as a (plan B), to reduce risks associated with producing for export.
- Formed a committee on monitoring and evaluation (M&E) to train farmers on participatory M&E, and apply it to be able to identify potential problems and find solutions for such.
- Supported women and trained them on post harvest processes to serve two causes: a) support the exporting activities, (b) and as a source of income for women.
- Negotiated and joined a network of 8 farmer based NGOs –participating with AgReform Extension project- with an aim to support cultivating for export, and clean agriculture.
- Supports women in their poultry raising activities as income generating activities, which serves also to alleviate potential exporting risks.
- Constructing building to house the NGO, with members’ contribution.
